Mexican Monolith Is World's Tallest Freestanding Rock (via Yahoo)
Here are the stats of this thing:
Name: Peña de Bernal Natural Monument
Height: 1,421 feet
Composition: 67 percent silica, a relatively weather-resistant mineral
Creation: About 8.7 million years ago; formed in a subduction zone (one tectonic plate dives under another and forces the one on top to rise), the lighter rock surrounding the silica eroded away over time to form the free-standing formation that exists today.
Add this to the list of natural wonders that I would love to visit and photograph before I die. I don't have an actual list, though, because if I did, it would be massive and depressing.
